Papal Visit Highlights Algeria as Beacon of Peace and Coexistence

The Algerian press highlighted on Wednesday the success of the Pope’s official visit to Algeria, at the invitation of the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, emphasizing Algeria’s central role as a beacon for promoting the values of coexistence and peace.

The daily El Chaab described the visit as a “success,” highlighting Algeria’s “pivotal role in its regional and international environment as a beacon of coexistence and a pillar of stability in the Mediterranean.” In its coverage of the Pope’s second day in Annaba, the newspaper also quoted intellectuals and academics who emphasized the “deep significance” of choosing Algeria as the first stop of his African tour, noting that this reflects the country’s long-standing tradition of embracing diversity and safeguarding human dignity, and underscores “the continuation of a path rooted in coexistence.” In an editorial titled “Algeria Friendship and Peace,” El Djamhouria stated that the visit conveyed “powerful and deeply meaningful messages to the world,” reflecting humanitarian solidarity and the highest values of human fraternity.

Meanwhile, the paper highlighted broad acclaim from both national and international media, noting that the visit reinforced Algeria’s image as “a source of pride for its civilizational belonging to the Mediterranean basin and its Islamic spiritual values as a land of intercultural coexistence.” El Massa covered the Pope’s visit to Annaba in an article titled “Annaba Opens Its Arms Wide to Welcome the Son of Saint Augustine, the Pope of the Vatican,” highlighting his joy at visiting the Basilica of Saint Augustine and his rich programme in the city.

Similarly, El Moudjahid reported on the Pope’s visit to the same province, stressing that it would remain a lasting milestone.

It also highlighted the official and popular reception extended to the guest of Algeria.

Under the title “Messages of Peace from the Land of Augustine,” An-Nasr described the visit as having a “clear geopolitical dimension,” as well as “spiritual and humanitarian significance,” particularly against a backdrop of rising violence, hatred, and global conflict.

The newspaper added that the visit went beyond its “protocol dimension” to reinforce Algeria’s position as a meeting point of civilizations and an international platform for promoting peace, tolerance, and coexistence.

In this regard, L’Indépendant described the visit as a “journey into history,” highlighting the warm welcome granted to the Pope.

Furthermore, El Watan stated that the visit revealed “Algeria’s true face as a land of knowledge, tolerance, and shared living,” while also covering the Pope’s programme during his stay.

For its part, L’Expression described the visit as reflecting the “symbolic image of Islamic-Christian brotherhood,” while Le Soir d’Algérie wrote that “Algeria is a crossroads, and Annaba, with its Roman ruins and minarets, clearly illustrates this reality.”
