Spain to Send Humanitarian Aid to Cuba Via United Nations

Spain said on Monday it will provide humanitarian aid to Cuba through the United Nations system, as the Caribbean island grapples with a deep economic and energy crisis worsened by external pressures, Spanish officials and global media reported.

In a statement, the José Manuel Albares-led Spanish Foreign Ministry said the assistance will be delivered via U.N. channels in the form of food supplies and essential health products, without specifying the timetable or the amount of aid.

The announcement followed a meeting in Madrid between Albares and Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez, during which they discussed the current situation facing Cuba, including the impact of a tightening U.S. embargo and fuel shortages that have contributed to prolonged blackouts and strains on basic services.

Spain’s decision comes amid growing regional efforts to address Cuba’s humanitarian needs; Mexico recently sent more than 800 tons of aid to Havana through Mexican navy ships, highlighting mounting international concern over food and fuel shortages.
