Spain Says Venezuela’s Natural Resources Belong to Venezuelan People, Warns Against Undermining Sovereignty

Spain has affirmed that Venezuela’s natural resources belong to the Venezuelan people and cautioned that any attempt to undermine state sovereignty would establish a dangerous precedent for the international rules‑based order, Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares said in an interview with Radio Nacional de España. Albares stressed that control over natural resources is a fundamental element of sovereignty and must be respected under international law.
Albares reiterated Madrid’s opposition to the use of force or external interference in Venezuela and underscored Spain’s support for a peaceful, democratic resolution led by Venezuelans themselves. He stated that Spain backs broad dialogue between the government and the opposition and is prepared to facilitate mediation “whenever the parties deem it useful.”
The foreign minister also emphasized Spain’s diplomatic approach in Latin America, positioning Madrid as a bridge among actors rather than a source of increased tensions. Albares warned that recent developments in Caracas represent a serious threat to established international norms and stressed the importance of respecting state sovereignty and the rule of law in global relations.
