ALGIERS, April 14, 2026 – The official visit of Pope Leo XIV to Algeria, at the invitation of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, was widely covered on Tuesday by the national press, which described it as a historic day, highlighting Algeria’s pivotal role as a meeting ground of civilizations and an undeniable model of religious coexistence and human fraternity.

For the newspaper, the unprecedented visit of Pope Leo XIV, which is “a plea for peace and dialogue in the world, once again demonstrates that Algeria is not merely a territory, but a crossroads of great civilizations.”

In the same vein, Horizons underlined that this visit, of “unique and deeply symbolic resonance,” advocates for the “promotion of coexistence, dialogue, and peace.”

Under the headline “The pilgrim of peace in Algiers,” L’Expression wrote in its editorial that “at a time when the world hears only the clash of arms and the discourse of hatred and unrestrained domination, the Pope, convinced of the importance of interreligious dialogue, fully recognizes the importance that Algeria attaches to the values of peaceful coexistence, tolerance, and peace, forged through its struggles and civilizational history.”

Focusing on “the global significance of the event,” the same newspaper highlighted the “humanist and universal dimension” of the visit, asserting that the Pope came to “affirm his affiliation with the doctrine of Saint Augustine.”

For its part, L’Echo d’Algérie reported that the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, who welcomed the Pope upon his arrival in Algiers, reaffirmed “Algeria’s full and unwavering readiness to continue its close cooperation with the Vatican,” calling for “the spirit of understanding to prevail over division, dialogue over confrontation, and coexistence over hostility.”

Le Jour d’Algérie noted that the President of the Republic and the Sovereign Pontiff “are joining efforts to open the doors of international dialogue.”

In the same context, El Khabar extensively covered the “significance of this historic visit,” highlighting “the privileged position that Algeria now enjoys as a unifying country capable of bringing voices together and forging consensus in a world dominated by violence and force.”

Echoing this perspective, El Massa stated that the Sovereign Pontiff delivered “strong messages,” considering Algeria a “pioneer country in promoting dialogue and spreading the culture of peace and coexistence,” while Echaâb emphasized “the symbolism of this visit,” particularly as “Pope Leo XIV visited Djamaâ El-Djazaïr, which embodies the values of dialogue and interreligious tolerance.”

For its part, El Massar El Arabi highlighted the symbolic significance of the event, which affirms Algeria as a “land of dialogue and coexistence between religions and civilizations,” further strengthening the country’s image as a promoter of a culture of dialogue in a world in need of wisdom.
