GAZA: Civil Defense Reports 90% of Shelters Flooded by Heavy Rains

The spokesperson for the Civil Defense in the Gaza Strip, Mahmoud Bassal, told reporters on Wednesday that the rains that have been falling over the past few days have flooded about 90 percent of the shelters, amid extremely difficult humanitarian conditions experienced by the displaced persons as a result of the Zionist aggression.

During the briefing, Bassal stressed that the tents did not provide the minimum level of protection for citizens during the cold spells, stressing the urgent need to introduce mobile homes as an immediate solution to alleviate the suffering of the population and cope with the repercussions of winter.

He pointed out that recent low pressure systems caused more than 27,000 tents, housing displaced persons, to be swept away and flooded, in a scene he described as catastrophic, noting that the damage actually affected more than 53,000 tents, either completely or partially.

According to a previous statement by the media office in Gaza, more than a quarter of a million displaced persons have been directly affected, out of a total of around 1.5 million living in tents and makeshift shelters that lack the most basic protection and safety features.
