The Algerian national senior fencing team, specializing in sabre for both men and women, has been engaged in preparatory training since Saturday in Oran, ahead of the World Cup in individual and team events scheduled from November 7 to 10 at the “Miloud Hadefi” Olympic Complex.
The fencers have settled into the sports hall of the Oran complex, honing their skills and making final adjustments to ensure they are in optimal condition for the world championships.
To this end, the technical staff has selected 14 fencers—six women and eight men—for this phase of the 2024 World Cup. The men’s team comprises Akram Bounabi, Bounechada Zakaria, Mairi Anis, Saad Yacine, Anis Ainouche, Lotfi Abrihen, Sami Rahmani, and Bounaceur Belsem. The women’s team features Bendouda Chaima, Belkebir Kaouther, Naila Benchagour, Abik Boungab, Belkahla Afnane Djaouaher, and Driss Oumaima. They are guided by coaches Zahra Gamir and Hama Antar, with additional support from French coach Pablo Rey.
Under the leadership of stage manager Zahra Gamir, a national coach and former international competitor, the Algerian sabreurs are undergoing an intensive training program. “We are focusing on combat management and mental preparation, as well as improving technical skills,” Zahra Gamir told APS.
The athletes are in excellent physical condition, particularly since this marks their first major international competition of the season, coinciding with a new qualification system for the upcoming 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. The primary objective is to establish and nurture a young team, gaining valuable experience and maturity, with the aim of qualifying for the advanced round of 128 in this World Cup.
“Our athletes have made significant progress, but they must remain competitive and prepared for the big day,” Gamir emphasized.
This event in Oran is anticipated to be highly competitive, featuring seasoned teams from countries such as France, South Korea, and the United States.
“We aspire to earn as many points as possible; this is an opportunity to compete at a high level and gain a comprehensive understanding of our capabilities in preparation for future competitions,” she added.
The individual events (for both men and women) will take place from November 7 to 9, while the fourth and final day will be dedicated to team events.
