DRC Urges Immediate UN Action on Escalating Crisis, Warns of Growing Public Unrest

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) called on the UN Security Council to take immediate action to address the worsening crisis in the country, warning that if the Council fails to intervene, public unrest will follow. Foreign Minister Therese Kayikwamba Wagner highlighted the ongoing humanitarian catastrophe, with over 500,000 displaced and more than 100 people sent to health centers in just the past 24 hours. Wagner condemned the Rwandan forces, accusing them of committing war crimes and crimes against humanity with impunity, while the Security Council remained silent.

Wagner urged the Security Council to take decisive action against Rwanda, questioning what further violations would be required for the Council to act. She stressed the importance of the Security Council’s decisions, stating that the lives of civilians, suffering from a lack of basic necessities, depended on its response. She called for strong measures, including sanctions on Rwanda and the withdrawal of Rwandan troops from Congolese territory.

The minister criticized the international community’s approach to the crisis, asserting that labeling it as an “African problem” undermines global solidarity. She called for collective responsibility, demanding urgent actions such as sanctions against Rwanda’s military leadership, a natural resource embargo, and greater transparency on arms transfers. Wagner warned that without intervention, the crisis could spiral further, and the public would be forced to take matters into their own hands.
