Crans-Montana Fire in Switzerland: 58 Injured Still Hospitalized

Fifty-eight people remain hospitalized in Switzerland and abroad following the fire that killed 41 people and injured 115 on New Year’s Eve at the Swiss ski resort of Crans-Montana, Swiss news agency ATS-Keystone reported Tuesday.
The National Network for Disaster Medicine (KATAMED) told the agency that, according to figures updated Monday, 21 injured persons were still in Swiss hospitals: 12 in Lausanne, eight in Zurich, including two in intensive care, and one in Morges near Lausanne.
Nine others were in rehabilitation clinics, including eight in Sion and one in Bellikon, in the canton of Aargau.
According to the same source, 28 patients were still receiving treatment abroad, including 14 in France, four in Germany, eight in Italy, and two in Belgium, based on KATAMED data.
One month ago, federal authorities and Swiss hospitals had indicated that 70 people were still hospitalized.
Hospitals and cantonal authorities generally do not provide details about patients’ conditions, but local officials had stated after the tragedy that many of the 115 injured were seriously affected.
The fire, which mainly affected teenagers and young adults, was caused, according to investigators, by sparks from fountain candles that ignited soundproof foam on the ceiling of a bar’s basement.
On Tuesday, the prosecutor of the canton of Valais also told ATS that a letter rogatory would soon be sent to the Paris prosecutor’s office to question three bar employees and one customer present at the time of the fire.
