Cholera Deaths in Yemen Reach 861 Since January 2024, Reports WHO

The World Health Organization (WHO) reported on Wednesday that cholera deaths in Yemen have reached 861 since the beginning of 2024.

Since March 2024, the number of cholera and Acute Watery Diarrhea (AWD) cases, along with related deaths, has risen steadily, peaking at over 10,000 weekly cases by mid-July. From January 1 to November 24, 2024, a total of 245,776 cases and 861 deaths were reported, with a Case Fatality Rate (CFR) of 0.4%. This rise in cases and deaths reflects retrospective adjustments based on more detailed data from areas outside the control of Yemen’s internationally recognized government, warranting cautious interpretation.

In November 2024 alone, Yemen saw 21,082 new cholera cases and 71 deaths (CFR: 0.3%), marking a 9% increase in cases and a 20% rise in deaths compared to October. Despite ongoing containment efforts, challenges persist due to flooding, heavy rains, and the volatile security situation in the country.
