British government braces for 6,000 job cuts in the steel and oil refining sectors

The British government is preparing for a “dark” September, with the loss of 6,000 jobs in the steel and oil refining sectors.

In total, Tata Steel is expected to cut 2,800 jobs at its Port Talbot plant in South Wales, and up to 3,000 jobs at British Steel, owned by the Chinese group Jingye, in Scunthorpe (northeast England). The Scottish oil refinery at Grangemouth will eliminate an additional 400 jobs.

In January, Indian steelmaker Tata Steel announced it would cut up to 2,800 jobs in the UK as part of the restructuring of its giant Port Talbot steelworks.

The company, which employs 8,000 people in the country, has promised that its restructuring plan will “secure the largest part of its production capacity” while “reducing its CO2 emissions.”

This news collides with figures released Tuesday by the country’s National Statistics Office, which disclosed that unemployment fell to 4.1% in July.
