Bangladesh : President’s office declares the dissolvement of Parliament

DHAKA – Bangladesh’s Parliament was dissolved on Tuesday, the president’s office said in a statement, hours after the student leaders’ deadline, otherwise they would have launched a “strict programme”.
A day after PM Sheikh Hasina resignation, prominent student leaders announced in a video on Facebook that the parliament should be dissolved by 3 p.m. (0900 GMT) on Tuesday and asked “revolutionary students to be ready” if their demand will not be achieved.
Bangladesh’s army chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman had been due to meet student leaders at 0600 GMT to discuss the formation of an interim government to hold the elections soon, yet the details about the meeting are still obscure.
Zaman had announced Hasina’s resignation on Monday, after a month of student led protests, that started with calls to abolish job quotas law, and expanded to a campaign to topple PM Sheikh Hasina.
About 300 people were killed and thousands injured from both sides of the conflict, making it the worst burst of violence Bangladesh has ever witnessed since its war of independence in 1971.
