Arab League Urges “Immediate” End to Escalation in Yemen, Calls for Dialogue

The League of Arab States on Tuesday expressed deep concern over the serious and rapid developments in the Republic of Yemen, following the Southern Transitional Council’s failure to respond to the demands of the Presidential Leadership Council, calling for an “immediate” halt to the escalation in the governorates of Hadramout and Al-Mahra in eastern Yemen.

In a statement, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States Ahmed Aboul Gheit appealed to all member states of the Coalition to Support Legitimacy to “preserve the spirit of Arab solidarity in this delicate circumstance, exercise restraint, and adhere to the unified Arab position supporting Yemeni legitimacy, in accordance with the Council of the League of Arab States’s successive resolutions on this crisis.” He also reiterated his condemnation of “any military movements aimed at imposing a secessionist reality on the ground by force, which threatens the territorial integrity of Yemen and causes serious harm to the southern Yemeni issue, which must be addressed through dialogue rather than the imposition of a fait accompli,” stressing that separatist tendencies harm Arab national security.
