Arab League: Algeria Elected President of the Intellectual Property Artistic Committee

Algeria has been unanimously elected as the president of the Intellectual Property Artistic Committee of the Arab League during the opening of its 14th meeting held in Cairo, Egypt, as announced by the Algerian Ministry of Culture and Arts.

The ministry hailed this election as a testament to its efforts in strengthening the culture of copyright protection and enhancing Algeria’s presence within regional and international organizations dedicated to this field.

According to the ministry, this achievement reflects “the initiatives undertaken to realize the objectives of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, aimed at establishing intellectual property as a fundamental tool for supporting the national economy and promoting knowledge-based development, consistent with the comprehensive vision for building a diversified and sustainable economy.”

Samir Thaalbi, the current Director General of the National Office of Copyright and Related Rights (ONDA), was elected for a renewable two-year term, securing the majority of votes from member states over candidates from Egypt, Morocco, and Mauritania.

This election also signifies “a diplomatic and cultural victory” for Algeria, underscoring the trust that member states place in its institutional competence and progressive vision regarding intellectual property protection, the ministry emphasized.

Additionally, the ministry noted that this “well-deserved” recognition on the Arab stage results from a “deep reform process” that Algeria has pursued in this area, facilitated by a national strategy focused on institutional coordination, good governance, and the application of modern technologies to enhance the mechanisms for collective management of copyright.

Algeria’s election to the presidency of the Intellectual Property Artistic Committee further illustrates “the growing prominence of Algeria on the Arab and international intellectual property stage, reaffirming the confidence of our counterparts in the Algerian vision, which continues to prioritize the role of culture as a catalyst for development, a pillar of soft power, and a means of fostering creative exchanges and integration among Arab countries,” the statement concluded.

The 14th meeting of the Intellectual Property Artistic Committee of the Arab League will continue on Thursday in Cairo, Egypt, which hosts the General Secretariat of the League.
