Annaba Mediterranean Film Festival Highlights Algeria’s Role as Incubator of Committed Arab Cinema

An international conference, organized on Sunday as part of the 6th Annaba Mediterranean Film Festival, highlighted Algeria’s pioneering role as an incubator for Arab cinematic projects with a combative and nationalist dimension, affirming the deep historical bonds between Algerian and Egyptian cinema.

Participants in this conference, convened to mark the centenary of the late Egyptian director Youssef Chahine (1926-2008) under the slogan “The Return of the Prodigal Son After Fifty Years,” stated that Algerian cinema represented a strategic support and a free space that allowed Chahine to embody his intellectual vision, praising the duality of creativity and struggle that characterized his artistic career.

Egyptian director Khaled Youssef, a protégé of the late filmmaker, stated that “Algeria offered a fertile environment that contributed to enriching Youssef Chahine’s creative works,” adding that Chahine’s thought embodied the idea of a shared Arab destiny, particularly regarding the Palestinian cause.

For his part, Egyptian artist Seif Abdelrahman reviewed the “exceptional milestones” that brought Youssef Chahine together with Algerian intellectuals. He also addressed Chahine’s works produced in collaboration with Algeria, particularly those of a revolutionary nature that explicitly opposed colonial powers.

The gathering was also attended by Egyptian actress Soheir El-Morshidy, who spoke on aspects of Youssef Chahine’s human and professional experience, highlighting “the spirit of outstanding artistic collaboration that characterized the generation of great Arab creators.” In their closing remarks, participants concluded that commemorating Youssef Chahine’s centenary in the city of Annaba stands as a tribute of loyalty, consolidating the solidity of cultural relations between Algeria and Egypt, and affirming the necessity of reviving joint Mediterranean cinematic production with renewed visions in line with today’s challenges.
