Algerian President: We authorized the import of livestock from Africa as part of a positive strategy related to meat

ALGIERS – Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune emphasized that his program prioritizes ensuring food security, access to drinking water, and safeguarding the nation from all threats, with a commitment to achieving self-sufficiency in durum wheat by 2025.

“Those who rely on the production of others are not truly free, which is why I am committed to achieving self-sufficiency in durum wheat,” the Algerian President said during his regular media meeting with representatives of the national press.

“We are also working towards achieving self-sufficiency in soft wheat, and the high quality of Algerian agricultural products has made them sought after in the Gulf and Europe,” he said, adding that “The liberalization of the agricultural sector has brought in new technologies, allowing farmers to achieve remarkable successes in this field.”

Regarding the import of livestock, President Tebboune said, “We authorized the import of livestock from Africa as part of a positive strategy related to meat, and we resorted to importing meat to avoid leaving citizens in need, and we plan to continue this in the future.”

Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune further explained, regarding the agricultural sector, “The remaining gap in agriculture is in milk production, so we are working to produce locally what we consume, and we’ve partnered with the Qataris, who are investing in Adrar. The gap also applies to both white and red meats, and farmers must be aware of the importance of contentment.” He also noted that strict laws will be enforced against those who sell ewes, in order to protect the nation’s livestock.

Separately, President Tebboune stressed that smuggling Algerian food products abroad is a crime, carrying penalties of up to 30 years in prison.

Additionally, he disclosed that last year, a waste of tons of bread was recorded, amounting to 350 million dollars, which is unacceptable.

In the same meeting, President Tebboune said that “there is a resurgence among the youth, and the current generation is proud of their country abroad and works to promote national products.”

“Importing could lead to a compromise in sovereignty if we resort to borrowing, so I hope that in agriculture, we have young people like those who implemented the desalination plants,” he added.
