Algerian Minister Advocates for Comprehensive Migration Strategy at G7 Meeting

At the recent G7 Interior Ministers’ Meeting, Algeria’s Interior Minister, Brahim Merad, emphasized the importance of a long-term, coordinated strategy to tackle the multifaceted challenges of migration. He pointed out that, historically, migration has been instrumental in promoting cultural exchange and economic growth. However, in recent years, it has become linked with instability, resulting in a significant increase in irregular migration from countries facing security and developmental crises.
Algeria has grappled with substantial migration challenges for many years, a situation that has recently intensified. The minister highlighted the security risks linked to illegal migration, such as terrorism, cross-border crime, and organized criminal networks. In response to these threats, Algeria has implemented a systematic approach emphasizing legal, humanitarian, and developmental solutions.
Since early 2024, Algeria has repatriated 80,000 irregular migrants and dismantled a substantial number of international criminal networks. Cooperation with global organizations like the International Organization for Migration (IOM) has also enabled the safe return of more than 6,000 migrants to their home countries.
The minister emphasized that addressing migration requires more than temporary measures. It demands a comprehensive vision that tackles the root causes of migration, such as the need for stability and development in source countries. He praised the ongoing dialogue with international partners and underscored Algeria’s role, under President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, in supporting development efforts across Africa.
Additionally, he called on global partners to intensify efforts in combating extremism, discrimination, Islamophobia, and hate speech, especially to ensure the well-being of Algerian communities abroad. He reaffirmed Algeria’s commitment to working together to find sustainable solutions to the migration challenge.
