Algeria Positions Itself as a Key Driver of Africa’s Energy Integration and Trade

The Algerian Minister of Energy and Renewable Energy, Mourad Adjal, highlighted on Wednesday, during his participation in the 12th African Regional Forum on Sustainable Development, Algeria’s aspiration to contribute to the support and development of energy in Africa, and to assume a pivotal role in enhancing its trade by sharing its expertise in training, technical assistance, and project implementation. He further noted that the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline project consecrates continental energy integration.

Speaking via video link at the high-level seminar on Sustainable Development Goal 7 “Access to Energy” held in Addis Ababa from April 28 to 30, Adjal said that “Algeria is working alongside its partners Nigeria and Niger to advance the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline project, which is expected to play a key role in consolidating energy integration at both the regional and continental levels.” The minister noted that the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, places considerable importance on continental cooperation and regards Africa as “a priority focus” within Algeria’s national strategy for developing international partnerships.

He stressed that Algeria aims to “contribute to strengthening and growing Africa’s energy sector, and to take on a central role in boosting energy trade by sharing our expertise in training, technical assistance, and the delivery of energy projects.” The minister added that Algeria is also working to develop infrastructure and regional electricity interconnection, while stepping up power exchanges with African countries, with a view to optimizing the use of electrical infrastructure across the continent, fostering greater cooperation between countries, ensuring reliable electricity supply security, and building durable local capacities.
