Senior US Official Praises Algeria’s “Incredible” Tourism Potential After Landmark Visit

U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau expressed admiration for Algeria’s “incredible” tourism potential following his first visit to the country, describing it as “fascinating” and voicing his eagerness to return for further exploration.

“Algeria has incredible tourism potential, and I look forward to coming back one day to explore this fascinating country,” Landau wrote on social media Wednesday, sharing impressions from his two-day diplomatic mission to Algiers.

During the visit, Landau met with President of the Republic Abdelmadjid Tebboune and several senior ministers to discuss regional stability, security, and economic prosperity. Despite a demanding official schedule, he took time to visit iconic landmarks, including the Dey’s Palace in the historic Casbah district and the Grande Poste in the city centre.

Describing Algiers as “captivating,” the senior U.S. official highlighted its unique blend of Moorish and European architecture and its “magnificent” Mediterranean vistas. “Algiers is a captivating city with its blend of Moorish and European architecture and its magnificent views of the Mediterranean Sea,” he added.

His visit aligns with growing international interest in Algeria as a travel destination, with major American outlets, including USA Herald and The Washington Post, naming it among the top trending destinations for 2026. Both publications have praised Algeria as a “true treasure,” highlighting its diverse landscapes ranging from well-preserved Roman ruins to the vast Sahara Desert.

With iconic cities including Ghardaïa, Tlemcen, and Tipaza, Algeria is increasingly recognized as an exceptional, safe, and rapidly emerging destination on the global tourism map.
