ALGIERS – Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has officially ordered the launch of an international call for tenders to produce and direct a film about Emir Abdelkader, a national hero and a symbol of Algeria’s resistance against colonialism. The announcement came during a Council of Ministers meeting, according to a statement from the Algerian presidency.
The project aims to honor the legacy of Emir Abdelkader, who is revered not only for his military leadership during Algeria’s struggle against French colonization in the 19th century but also for his humanitarian values and contributions to Islamic scholarship. The film is expected to highlight his life, leadership, and the values he upheld, serving as an inspirational narrative for both Algerians and the international audience.
President Tebboune emphasized the importance of ensuring the film’s historical accuracy and its ability to resonate with modern viewers. By opening the project to international filmmakers, Algeria aims to attract high-quality proposals from global talent, ensuring that the film not only celebrates Abdelkader’s legacy but also reaches a wide audience. The initiative is part of Algeria’s broader cultural efforts to preserve and promote its rich history.
