Algeria : Expanded Diaspora Representation Deemed “Unprecedented Achievement” Ahead of July Elections

The Secretary of State to the Algerian Minister of Foreign Affairs in charge of the National Community Abroad, Sofiane Chaib, affirmed on Tuesday the full mobilization of the ministry’s central services and its diplomatic and consular missions to assist the National Independent Authority for Elections (ANIE) in ensuring the smooth organization of the People’s National Assembly elections scheduled for 2 July.
Chaib’s remarks were made during a coordination meeting with diplomatic and consular missions, held via videoconference and organized by ANIE at its headquarters in Club des Pins. The meeting took place in the presence of ANIE’s Interim President, Karim Khelfane, heads of diplomatic and consular centers, as well as the authority’s coordinators and delegates to diplomatic and consular representations abroad.
In this regard, Chaib stressed “the full mobilization of the ministry’s central services and its diplomatic and consular missions abroad to carry out their assigned tasks in assisting ANIE, through the deployment of all human resources and the provision of all necessary logistical and material support, to ensure the smooth organization of the legislative elections.” The Secretary of State noted that the meeting “reflects the shared commitment to sustaining close coordination and cooperation between the services of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and ANIE regarding the organization of the election for the national community abroad, driven by the accumulated experience and results achieved during previous electoral processes.” Regarding the decision to increase the number of seats allocated to representatives of the diaspora in the Lower House from eight to 12, Chaib emphasized that “this is an unprecedented achievement in Victorious Algeria.
“As part of his presidential commitment, the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, has always ensured that Algerians abroad significantly contribute to all public policies,” recalled the same official. Following the official installation of ANIE coordinators and delegates to diplomatic and consular representations abroad, Karim Khelfane stressed the importance of the upcoming election, calling for “every effort to be made to ensure its success.” He further affirmed the need for “full coordination between coordinators, delegates, and heads of diplomatic and consular centers, given that the specific nature of organizing this electoral event abroad requires cohesion, cooperation, and mutual understanding.”
