Algeria–Chad: Deep-Rooted Ties Gain Momentum Amid Push for Stronger Cooperation

ALGER, April 22, 2026 – Relations between Algeria and Chad, grounded in longstanding fraternity, are experiencing renewed momentum, driven by a shared political will to strengthen dialogue and expand economic cooperation.

The official visit to Algeria by the President of the Republic of Chad, Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno, is expected to give fresh impetus to these ties of solidarity and elevate them toward broader prospects.

This visit crowns a series of high-level exchanges between officials of both countries, reflecting a clear determination to advance toward exemplary bilateral cooperation.

This orientation was illustrated by Algeria’s participation as guest of honor at the “SEMICA Tchad 2026” international exhibition on mining, quarries and hydrocarbons, held last January in N’Djamena, with the participation of Minister of State, Minister of Hydrocarbons Mohamed Arkab, representing the Algerian President, Abdelmadjid Tebboune.

In an address delivered on his behalf, the President stressed that Algeria, “mindful of its historical commitment, remains ready to share its expertise and support the efforts of the Republic of Chad in structuring and developing its strategic sectors, through concrete and targeted cooperation aimed at achieving tangible economic results, within the framework of South-South partnership.”

He further underlined that Algeria is convinced that “bilateral cooperation, based on historical foundations and fraternal ties, can now gain new momentum through concrete, mutually beneficial projects,” adding that Algeria’s participation in the event reflects “its attachment to the positive dynamic characterizing Algerian-Chadian relations.”

This dynamic was further reinforced by the notable participation of the Chadian President in the 4th Intra-African Trade Fair (IATF), held in Algiers in September 2025, which marked an important step in strengthening political dialogue and economic cooperation between the two brotherly countries.

During the event, the Chadian President praised Algeria’s leading role “in realizing the continent’s major ambitions through strengthening intra-African trade and promoting partnerships between its States,” while expressing his country’s interest in advancing the Trans-Saharan road project.

For his part, President Tebboune reaffirmed Algeria’s readiness to support Chad in efforts aimed at boosting its economic development.

In this context, three cooperation agreements in the hydrocarbons sector were signed in January in N’Djamena, establishing a general framework for collaboration in exploration, production, transport and resource development, as well as in human resource development, training and exchange of expertise.

Additionally, the launch of the Algiers–N’Djamena air route in October opened new prospects for economic exchanges, passenger transport and closer ties between the two peoples.

More broadly, the two countries share converging positions on major regional and international issues, underpinned by a common commitment to political and security coordination, respect for state sovereignty, support for regional stability, rejection of foreign interference, and the promotion of solidarity and cooperation.
