A3+ Group Backs Somalia, Calls for Sustainable Funding for AU Mission

The A3+ Group in the UN Security Council (Algeria, Somalia, Sierra Leone, and Guyana) reaffirmed on Tuesday, in New York, its full support for the security and stability of Somalia, emphasizing the importance of providing sufficient and sustainable funding for the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) to safeguard the gains achieved during recent years.

The statement came in remarks delivered by Sierra Leone’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Michael Imran Kanu, on behalf of the group during a Security Council session on the situation in Somalia, during which a draft resolution was voted to extend AMISOM’s mandate for an additional year.

The group underlined that it “participated in the negotiation process in a constructive spirit and with good intentions, guided by the principle of listening to the concerned country, while prioritizing Somali needs and committing to constructive dialogue with all relevant members.” The group further stressed “the necessity of preserving the hard-won security gains,” calling for “adequate, sustainable, and predictable funding for the AMISOM mission at this critical moment.”

The group emphasized that “funding the mission is essential to safeguarding the security gains,” warning that “a lack of funding could undermine the progress made, with repercussions on the security of Somalia and the region as a whole.” The group reiterated its support for Somalia’s sovereignty, unity, territorial integrity, and independence, while expressing gratitude to all partners supporting Somalia and its path toward peace and sustainable development.
