World Refugee Day: UNHCR Algeria Calls for Solidarity and Action in Support of Sahrawi Refugees

On the occasion of World Refugee Day, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Algeria has called for increased international solidarity and action to address the “critical” humanitarian situation faced by Sahrawi refugees residing in five camps near Tindouf.

“This year’s theme, ‘Solidarity with Refugees,’ serves as a powerful reminder that supporting refugees extends beyond mere words. It necessitates tangible actions, ongoing support, and sustainable solutions,” emphasized UNHCR Algeria in a statement.

The statement further noted, “For five decades, Sahrawi refugees have endured one of the longest and most overlooked displacement situations in the world.”

“Despite the efforts of humanitarian actors, including 28 partners working under the Sahrawi Refugee Response Plan (SRRP), and the unwavering commitment from Algerian authorities, only 34% of the $103.9 million required to meet the basic humanitarian needs of Sahrawi refugees has been mobilized in 2025,” it added.

In this context, Alistair Alan Boulton, the UNHCR representative in Algeria, remarked that solidarity with refugees “should manifest in the mobilization of necessary resources to ensure a dignified and healthy life for these individuals.”

UNHCR Algeria expressed its “deep appreciation” to the Algerian government and people, as well as to donor countries, private sector contributors, and all partners who demonstrate solidarity with Sahrawi refugees, the statement concluded.
