UN Security Council Holds Closed Consultations on Syria

The United Nations Security Council is holding closed consultations today, Friday, to discuss the latest developments in Syria. UN Special Envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, is expected to brief the council members on the current situation in the country.

Earlier this month, the Security Council emphasized the need for a comprehensive political process led by Syrians, highlighting the importance of addressing the aspirations of the Syrian people and enabling them to determine their future in a peaceful and democratic manner.

In a previous statement, the council underscored the significance of the political process in ensuring Syria’s sovereignty, independence, unity, and territorial integrity. It also called on all nations to respect these principles.

This session comes amidst ongoing political and humanitarian challenges in Syria, as international efforts persist to achieve stability and resolve the decade-long crisis.
