The 34th Arab Summit Kicks Off in Baghdad

The 34th ordinary Arab summit and the 5th Arab economic summit were launched in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, on Saturday, with the participation of Algeria’s Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs, National Community Abroad, and African Affairs, Ahmed Attaf, as a representative of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.

In the presence of Arab leaders and heads of state, along with the Secretaries-General of the United Nations, the Arab League, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, and the Gulf Cooperation Council—joined by dozens of guests from Arab nations, the European Union, and international organizations—the opening session of the summit is being held at the Government Palace in Baghdad. During this session, the delegation of the Kingdom of Bahrain, which chaired the previous summit, will deliver a speech before formally handing over the presidency to Iraq, host of the current 34th session.

The latest developments in the Palestinian cause top the agenda of the summit, amid the ongoing brutal aggression by the Israeli occupation against the Palestinian people. The session will also address the current political situation in the Arab world and explore ways to strengthen joint Arab action and enhance the effectiveness of the Arab multilateral cooperation framework.

Moreover, the Arab Development Summit will focus on the common economic and social challenges facing Arab countries, and explore prospects for collective action to strengthen food, water, and energy security across the region. In addition, the summit will address ways to enhance intra-Arab trade within the framework of the Greater Arab Free Trade Area, before concluding with the issuance of the “Baghdad Declaration.”
