Sahrawi Human Rights Committee Urges Urgent ICRC Action Against Moroccan Violations

The President of the Sahrawi National Committee for Human Rights, Abba Al-Haissan, has called for urgent international intervention against the escalating retaliatory crimes committed by Moroccan occupation forces against unarmed Sahrawi civilians. In a letter to International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) President Mirjana Spoljaric Egger, he highlighted systematic attacks on human rights activists, journalists, and bloggers, warning that continued silence emboldens Morocco’s repression.

Al-Haissan condemned the deteriorating conditions in Moroccan prisons, particularly for Sahrawi political detainees such as the Gdeim Izik group, who suffer severe mistreatment and unjust sentences that violate international justice standards. Reports from international observers confirm these violations, raising concerns about the lack of accountability.

He urged the ICRC to break its silence and take a firm stance against Morocco’s actions in Western Sahara. He called for immediate field visits to Moroccan prisons and the occupied territories to document the daily atrocities faced by Sahrawi civilians and ensure international attention to their plight.
