Putin: Iran has the right to pursue nuclear technology programmes for peaceful purposes

Russian President Vladimir Putin said Russia has repeatedly told “Israel” that there is no evidence Iran is aiming to get nuclear weapons, Reuters reported on Saturday, citing Sky News Arabia.

“Russia, as well as the IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency), has never had any evidence that Iran is preparing to obtain nuclear weapons, as we have repeatedly put the Israeli leadership on notice,” Sky News Arabia quoted Putin as saying.

The Russian president expressed his country’s readiness to support Iran in developing a peaceful nuclear programme, adding that “Iran has the right to pursue nuclear technology programs for peaceful purposes.”

“The fatwa in Iran banning nuclear weapons is of great importance,” he added, underscoring the religious ruling as a key element in Iran’s stance.

Speaking at an economic forum in St. Petersburg on Friday, Putin said Russia was sharing its ideas on how to stop the bloodshed, yet did not give details.

In this regard, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is expected to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday in Moscow, according to reports from NBC News and Axios.

Araghchi, in an interview with NBC News in Geneva following talks with top European diplomats, said Iran is ready to negotiate but insisted that “Israel” first must halt its aerial aggression.

Hostilities broke out on June 13 when the Zionist entity launched airstrikes on several sites across Iran, including military and nuclear facilities, prompting Tehran to launch retaliatory strikes.
