President Tebboune Orders New Water Sector Reform Plan and Renewable Energy Review

Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune chaired a Council of Ministers meeting on Sunday, during which he instructed the newly appointed Minister of Hydraulics to develop a comprehensive management plan aimed at modernizing Algeria’s water sector and strengthening long-term water security.

According to a statement issued by the Council of Ministers, the President, after congratulating the new minister on his appointment, emphasized that the sector requires a renewed strategic framework as part of the state’s broader development vision. He tasked the minister with preparing a modern management plan to improve efficiency, reinforce infrastructure, and ensure water security remains a central national priority. Tebboune also called for the renewal and modernization of the sector’s monitoring and alert systems, stressing the need for rapid diagnosis and immediate response capabilities in emergency situations in order to enhance public service delivery.

The meeting also addressed the restructuring of the energy and renewable energy sector. Following a presentation on ongoing reforms, the President instructed that a feasibility study be conducted on the creation of a Secretary of State for Renewable Energies, which would operate within the new institutional framework designed to improve coordination and strategic oversight of the sector.

In the same session, President Tebboune praised the efforts of workers and management at Sonelgaz, highlighting their role in supporting national energy stability and development.
