Over 400 Former EU Officials Urge Action Against Zionist E1 Settlement Plan in West Bank

More than 400 former European ministers, ambassadors and senior officials called Wednesday, in an open, letter the leaders of the European Union to “act now” against the illegal annexation being carried out by the Zionist entity in the occupied West Bank through the E1 project, which plans the construction of thousands of housing units.

The 448 signatories, including former European Commission Vice-President Josep Borrell and former Belgian Prime Minister Guy Verhofstadt, said that the EU and its member states, in cooperation with their partners, must take immediate measures to deter (the Zionist entity) from continuing its illegal annexation of Palestinian territory in the occupied West Bank. The Zionist entity approved the E1 project in August 2025, which would effectively divide the occupied West Bank in two.

The United Nations, the European Union and numerous leaders have called on the Zionist entity to abandon the project.

In their letter, they stressed that the EU and its member states must act now, particularly at the Foreign Affairs Council on May 11th.

The signatories argued that the EU must , at a minimum, impose targeted sanctions, including visa bans and a prohibition on conducting business within the EU, against all individuals involved in illegal settlement activities, particularly those who promote, tender for, and implement the E1 area plan, .
