
ALGIERS – Algerian President, Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, and Minister of National Defense, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, chaired a Cabinet meeting on Monday, which addressed a draft bill related to social security, along with presentations on strengthening trade union work and social dialogue, as well as measures and preparations for the upcoming holy month of Ramadan.
A statement from the Algerian Presidency indicated that following the Prime Minister’s report on the government’s activities over the past two weeks, and interventions from ministers on draft laws and presentations, President Tebboune issued the following instructions and directives:
On the Draft Bill Regarding Social Security (Extension of Maternity Leave):
The draft bill was approved, ensuring equal rights for women in terms of wages and benefits, on par with men. President Tebboune praised the significant progress Algeria has made in advancing women’s rights, viewing this bill as a national duty that upholds the principles of the November 1st Declaration and honours women’s contributions to the liberation struggle.
On the Ministerial Joint Presentation Regarding Preparations for the Holy Month of Ramadan:
– The President emphasized the need for vigilance and caution against any attempts to disrupt the market’s supply system.
– He highlighted the importance of updating and strengthening monitoring systems, alongside a continued fight against market manipulation, with the implementation of the strictest legal penalties for all violations.
On Strengthening Trade Union Work and Social Dialogue:
– President Tebboune reaffirmed that the right to unionize is guaranteed in Algeria, with the state committed to respecting this right. He acknowledged the essential role of strong, representative unions in enhancing the labor market.
– The reorganization and adjustment of unions under the new law should aim to further strengthen social dialogue across all sectors.
Before concluding the meeting, the Cabinet approved the draft Organic Law on the jurisdiction, organization, and operations of the Court of Disputes, a draft law concerning the settlement of the 2022 budget, and two presidential decrees on Algerian-Jordanian cooperation in the fields of industry, tourism, and social affairs.
