ALGIERS – Algerian Minister of State, Minister of Energy, Mines, and Renewable Energies, Mohamed Arkab, met on Tuesday with the Ambassador of Canada to Algeria, Robin Wettlaufer, during which they exchanged views on ways to strengthen bilateral cooperation between Algeria and Canada in the fields of energy, mining, and renewable energies, while focusing on exploring future investment opportunities and expanding partnerships between economic institutions of both countries, the Algerian ministry said in a statement.

On this occasion, the Algerian minister presented the reforms undertaken by Algeria, particularly the new legislation on investment, hydrocarbons, and mining. He highlighted that these legal frameworks provide a solid foundation for attracting investment and facilitating foreign companies’ entry into the Algerian market. In this context, he encouraged Canadian companies to take advantage of the opportunities available, especially in hydrocarbon exploration, production, and processing, the energy sector, seawater desalination, and the localization of equipment manufacturing, according to the statement.

The two sides also discussed potential areas of cooperation in the mining sector, particularly in geological studies, mapping, and the exploitation and processing of mineral resources, with a focus on strategic and critical minerals, the source said, adding that the minister expressed Algeria’s interest in benefiting from Canada’s leading expertise in this field, noting its status as one of the world’s most prominent players in the mining industry.

Regarding renewable energies, they discussed ways to develop joint projects in wind energy, energy storage, advanced technological solutions, and green hydrogen development, as well as training, technology transfer, and capacity building.

According to the statement, the Canadian Ambassador expressed satisfaction with the quality of relations between the two countries and reaffirmed the interest of Canadian companies in strengthening their presence in the Algerian market, particularly in priority sectors. She also invited the minister to participate in the economic and investment forums to be held in Canada later this year, highlighting the opportunities these events offer to expand partnerships and exchange expertise between stakeholders in the energy and mining sectors.
