Mass Strikes Sweep France as Unions Protest Government’s Draft 2026 Budget

More than 250 demonstrations are taking place across France today, disrupting public transport and shutting down schools as unions mobilize against the government’s draft 2026 budget. The nationwide strikes reflect growing public anger over looming austerity measures, which many fear will further weaken essential services.
Unions representing workers across multiple sectors are demanding increased investment in public services, higher taxes on the wealthy, and a reversal of the unpopular pension reform. About 800,000 protesters are expected to join the rallies, underscoring the depth of opposition to the government’s fiscal approach.
The previous government, led by François Bayrou, had unveiled budget cuts of around €44 billion, a plan that contributed to its downfall after losing a no-confidence vote on September 8. Although newly appointed Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu has taken office, critics argue his proposals largely mirror Bayrou’s austerity path, fueling further discontent among unions and the wider public.
