Lavrov: Russia Protecting Its Interests in a Shifting Multipolar World

Russia continues to defend its legitimate interests on the global stage despite pressure from Western countries, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said during a government-hour session in the State Duma. According to Lavrov, Moscow is acting in accordance with international law and the principle of sovereign equality as the global order undergoes significant transformation.

Lavrov said the world has entered a period of rapid and profound change that could last for many years. He stressed that Russia stands in solidarity with the peoples of Venezuela and Cuba, who he said face strong external pressure, and reaffirmed Moscow’s readiness to support them. The minister also stated that Russia assumes the New START moratorium remains in force as long as the United States continues to observe its limits.

Addressing security concerns, Lavrov warned that if Greenland is militarized and used against Russia, Moscow would respond with appropriate military-technical measures. He also said understandings on Ukraine had been reached between President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump during their meeting in Alaska, adding that Russia will use all political and diplomatic efforts to achieve the objectives of its special military operation.

Lavrov further expressed gratitude to the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) for its assistance in liberating the Kursk region from Ukrainian fighters. He also emphasized that the development of Russia-China relations has a stabilizing effect on the international system.
