Latin America: Over 300,000 Migrants Crossed the Darien Gap in 2024

Authorities in Panama have reported that more than 300,000 migrants crossed the Darien Gap to reach Panama in 2024.
The treacherous Darien Gap links Colombia with the Central American nation of Panama, and an increasing number of migrants are making the journey northward toward the United States.
Officials from Panama’s National Migration Service stated, as reported by various media outlets, that “302,203 migrants crossed the Darien last year, representing a 42% decrease compared to the record high of 520,085 in 2023.”
“We work every day to ensure that illegal immigration does not reach Panama City or other parts of the country,” said Panamanian President José Raul Mulino on Thursday.
