Iran Says US Must Issue Visas for National Team Ahead of 2026 World Cup Despite Political Tensions

Iran’s Foreign Ministry has stated that the United States, as host of the FIFA World Cup 2026, is obligated to issue visas to Iran’s national football team regardless of political tensions between the two countries.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said on Wednesday that Tehran is making “every possible effort” to ensure the Iranian team faces no obstacles in participating in the tournament, which will be held in United States.

He stressed that Iranian players will travel solely for sporting purposes, adding that the host country has a “clear and specific obligation” to issue visas to team members without political considerations. Baghaei also urged FIFA to take steps to protect its credibility, arguing that recent developments affecting the Iranian team were “not worthy of FIFA.”

He further confirmed that Iran would use all available channels to facilitate its participation. In light of the absence of diplomatic relations between Tehran and Washington, Baghaei noted that Iran’s Interests Section in Washington is prepared to provide necessary consular assistance.

The spokesperson declined to comment on political negotiations, saying: “For now, we are focused on sports.”

The 2026 World Cup will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico from June 11 to July 19. Iran is scheduled to play matches in Los Angeles, Seattle, and other venues during the group stage.

The remarks come amid heightened regional tensions following recent military escalations and intermittent ceasefire arrangements in the Middle East, which have further complicated diplomatic relations between Tehran and Washington.
