IPC Warns of “Worst-Case Famine Scenario” Unfolding in the Gaza Strip

The United Nations food agency said on Tuesday that it is not getting the necessary volumes of humanitarian assistance into Gaza despite the Zionist occupation’s claims of taking new measures to enable more supplies to enter the enclave.

“We have not gotten the authorisation, the permission to move in the volumes that we’ve requested,” Ross Smith, a senior regional programme adviser at the World Food Programme’s Regional Bureau for East & Central Africa, said at a U.N. briefing in Geneva via video link.

The WFP statements come in line with an IPC alert that the “worst-case scenario of famine” is currently playing out in Gaza.

According to the latest evidence available until 25 July, the global hunger monitor warned that “Famine thresholds have been reached” in most of the besieged enclave, exacerbated by the occupation’s relentless attacks and displacement orders, while humanitarian aid remains “extremely restricted.”

The IPC report also indicated that one in three individuals in the Strip has gone without food for days at a time, with malnutrition rising sharply in the first half of July—reaching “Famine threshold” in Gaza City.

Between April and mid-July, more than 20,000 children have faced acute malnutrition, with more than 3,000 severely malnourished. Moreover, 11 hospitals have reported a rapid increase in hunger-related deaths of children under five years old, with at least 16 reported deaths since July 17, the source added.

It is noteworthy that the IPC’s latest analysis in May warned that Gaza will likely fall into famine if the Zionist occupation does not lift its blockade and stop its “military campaign.”

“Immediate action must be taken to end the hostilities and allow for unimpeded, large-scale, life-saving humanitarian response,” the IPC urged. “This is the only path to stopping further deaths and catastrophic human suffering.”

According to Gaza’s Health Ministry, at least 147 people have died of starvation since October 2023, including 88 children.

In parallel, the occupation forces killed at least 62 Palestinians across Gaza since dawn on Tuesday, including 19 aid seekers, despite alleged “pauses” in fighting to deliver some humanitarian aid.

The Zionist occupation’s genocidal war on Gaza has killed at least 59,921 Palestinians and wounded 145,233 others since October 7, 2023.
