Frente POLISARIO Condemns Killing of Sahrawi Citizen in Letter to UN

Sidi Mohamed Omar, Member of the National Secretariat and Representative of the Frente POLISARIO at the United Nations, has sent a letter to Ambassador Barbara Woodward, Permanent Representative of the United Kingdom to the United Nations and current President of the UN Security Council. In this letter, Omar expressed Frente POLISARIO’s strong condemnation of what it described as a brutal crime committed by Morocco, the occupying power, against Sahrawi citizen Omar Bahia El Hassan in the occupied city of El Aaiún.
Omar emphasized the Frente POLISARIO’s urgent request for the Security Council to recognize and act upon the UN’s legal and moral obligations toward the Sahrawi people, especially concerning the protection of Sahrawi civilians in Occupied Western Sahara. The letter highlighted the fact that the UN Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) continues to operate in the region without a human rights monitoring mandate, calling this a serious oversight.
The Frente POLISARIO reiterated its demand for an independent and permanent UN mechanism for monitoring and reporting on human rights conditions in the Territory. Omar urged that regular reports be presented to relevant UN bodies to ensure accountability and transparency regarding the human rights situation in Western Sahara.
