EU Ties Lifting of Sanctions on Russia to Full Military Withdrawal from Ukraine

The European Union has stated that the complete withdrawal of Russian forces from Ukraine is a key condition for altering or lifting EU sanctions on Moscow.
A European Commission spokesperson emphasized that ending what the EU calls Russia’s “unprovoked and unjustified aggression” and ensuring an unconditional military pullout from all Ukrainian territories would be necessary for any sanctions relief. The EU recently renewed its sanctions against Russia for another six months, with any modifications requiring unanimous approval from all 27 member states.
This announcement follows Washington’s separate agreements with both Ukraine and Russia to halt attacks at sea and on energy infrastructure. As part of the deal with Moscow, the U.S. agreed to push for easing some sanctions, raising questions about the EU’s stance on frozen Russian assets.
