Britain to urge UNSC support for aid deliveries to Sudan and Gaza

LONDON – Britain will seek support from other United Nations Security Council members on Monday for its call to allow aid deliveries to Sudan and Gaza, the British Foreign Ministry said.
With London holding the rotating presidency of the council, British foreign minister David Lammy is due to chair a vote on a UK/Sierra Leone-proposed draft resolution.
FM Lammy will say “the UK will never let Sudan be forgotten” and announce a doubling of Britain’s aid to 226 million pounds ($285 million), according to a statement from his ministry.
The crisis in Sudan broke out in April 2023, resulting in the killing of thousands and triggering the world’s largest displacement crisis.
The ministry said Lammy would also criticise the restrictions imposed by the Zionist entity on humanitarian aid to Gaza.
On Sunday, Bart Witteveen, the International Rescue Committee’s (IRC) Country Director for the occupied Palestinian territory, said, “Over 80% of humanitarian aid into Gaza is currently blocked, with deliveries at their lowest levels since October 2023.” He warned that the situation in northern Gaza has now reached a “beyond crisis point.”
