Brazil joins South Africa’s genocide case against “Israel” at the International Court of Justice

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) announced that Brazil has joined the case filed by South Africa accusing “Israel” of committing genocide against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.

The court said in a statement that Brazil based its request to join the court, submitted on September 17, on Article 63 of the Statute of the Court.

The Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomed Brazil’s decision to submit a formal request to join the lawsuit filed before the International Court of Justice by the Republic of South Africa against “Israel” regarding the crime of genocide committed against the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip, WAFA news agency reported.

In a statement, the ministry said “this step clearly expresses Brazil’s commitment to the principles of international law and its support for justice and the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people. It constitutes an important addition to international efforts aimed at ending impunity and holding Israel accountable for its crimes.”

Brazil joins a growing list of countries that have sought to intervene in the case, including Colombia, Mexico, Spain, Türkiye, Chile, Ireland, and others.

On December 29, 2023, South Africa filed a lawsuit against “Israel” for its involvement in “acts of genocide” against the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip.
