Algerian Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs, National Community Abroad, and African Affairs, Ahmed Attaf, said on Monday that the Libyan crisis is deepening and becoming more complicated day by day amid the waning international attention to it and the absence of any real prospects for the desired peaceful settlement.
“After 14 years since its outbreak, this brotherly country remains trapped in divisions that are fueled, nurtured, and exploited by foreign interventions, according to plans that bear no relation to the well-being, security, or stability of Libya,” Attaf said in his address during the General Debate of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly.
“Had the matter been left solely in the hands of the Libyans, they would have long ago managed to overcome their differences and set the country on the path to resolving the crisis,” he added.
In this regard, the Algerian Minister emphasized that “the time has come to put a definitive end to foreign interference in Libya’s internal affairs, so that this proud nation may begin to heal its wounds, reunite its people, and restore national unity.”
“Only then — and only then — can we truly pave the way for a consensual settlement based on holding presidential and parliamentary elections, through which Libyans can choose representatives who believe in and are committed to a unified and inclusive national project for Libya.”
