Army General: Algeria Will Remain a Key Player in Sahel Peace Efforts Despite Attempts to Undermine Its Role

ALGIERS – Army General Saïd Chanegriha, Deputy Minister to the Minister of National Defense and Chief of Staff of the People’s National Army, emphasized on Sunday that Algeria has consistently exerted significant efforts through its diplomatic initiatives to help restore political security and stability in the Sahel region, adding that it will remain a key player in promoting peace and security in the region, despite attempts to undermine its role.

“Algeria, firmly committed to the principles of its steadfast foreign policy—namely mutual respect, good neighborliness, non-interference in the internal affairs of states, and respect for their national sovereignty and territorial integrity—has consistently exerted significant efforts through diplomatic channels to restore political security and stability in the Sahel region by prioritizing peaceful solutions to crises, rejecting the use of force, and promoting dialogue and negotiations,” the Army General said as he presided over the national forum titled: “The African Sahel: Security and Development Challenges Amid Regional Geopolitical Tensions.”

In his speech, Army General Saïd Chanegriha, emphasized that Algeria has long been—and remains—a key pillar of security and stability in the region. This commitment is reflected in its efforts to enhance the defense capabilities of its partners and neighbors in the Sahel through bilateral military cooperation programs and training for the armed forces of regional countries. Additionally, Algeria supports these countries in counterterrorism efforts via the Joint Operational Staff Committee, adhering to the principle that each country is responsible for managing its own security challenges, with full respect for state sovereignty.

He also underscored Algeria’s proactive role in fostering economic and social development in the Sahel, grounded in the principle of solidarity with peoples who share strong historical and cultural ties with Algeria, through the provision of humanitarian aid and the funding of regional development projects aimed at enabling local communities to live with dignity and hope in their homelands, while countering efforts to destabilize the region.

“Despite attempts to undermine its pivotal role in the region, Algeria will remain a key player in ensuring peace and security in the Sahel. Guided by the wise and forward-looking strategic vision of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces and Minister of National Defense, Algeria will continue to do everything in its power to lay the foundations for dialogue and promote constructive regional approaches aimed at consolidating security and stability in the region.”
