The Algerian El-Djeich magazine, in its May issue titled “Preservation of Our National Memory, The Sacred Duty,” highlighted that Algeria is celebrating National Memory Day this month, which was established by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune in 2020 to commemorate one of the most significant events in the nation’s history—the May 8, 1945 massacres. This year marks the 80th anniversary of these atrocities, which remain a powerful symbol of the nation’s struggle and sacrifices.
The editorial of the magazine, titled, “Our National Memory: The Foundation of the Victorious Algeria,” said that “this solemn memory brings to mind the horrors of the barbaric massacres perpetrated by the coloniser against our unarmed people, atrocities that left an indelible stain which time shall never erase. It was, by all measures, a crime against humanity, aimed at silencing the rising call for freedom, and exterminating people, a permanent disgrace in the history of colonial France.”
“This occasion compels us to reflect on the immense sacrifices made by the valiant Algerian people in their struggle to break free from domination and oppression, before forging an unparalleled epic of liberation,” the magazine said.
“It is certain that the achievements attained thus far, denied only by the ungrateful, the embittered, or conspirators, are no accident. They are the fruit of tireless efforts, always grounded in sincerity and integrity, placing the supreme interests of the nation above all, with unwavering faith in the sacred weight of our legacy. It is under these principles that the new Algeria is being built, and it is our duty, now more than ever, to fortify its foundations, unite forces and wills, and consolidate the efforts of all Algerians,” El-Djeich added.
“No matter the conspiracies or machinations against our nation, the pledge of Algeria’s sons and daughters to follow the path of their forebears remains an unshakable doctrine. Their sole aim is to uphold the dignity of the nation, the freedom they cherish, and a respect that nothing can tarnish,” the magazine said, adding that “This is the mission of People’s National Army, the worthy heir to the National Liberation Army, fully aware of its immense responsibility, which it fulfils with dedication, commitment, and sincerity. It continues to develop all its components while remaining steadfast in the principles of the glorious November Revolution and the noble national values for which our illustrious ancestors sacrificed everything.”
