Algerian President Places “Major Importance” on Promoting Cinema

ALGIERS – Algerian Minister of Culture and Arts, Zouhir Ballalou, said on Monday in Algiers that “the Algerian state, under the guidance of President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, attaches significant importance to the cinematic sector” as part of efforts aimed at promoting this vital field.
At the opening of the international forum “Cinema and Memory” at El Aurassi Hotel, the minister said that “the President of the Republic has instructed that all Algerian individuals with cinematic talents, including those from the national community abroad, should be encouraged, with funding for cinematic works provided through bank loans covering up to 70%.”
“The President of the Republic has also directed support for specialists in the field to create filming studios and cinematic cities,” he added.
These efforts aim to bridge the gap and restore the sector’s glory,” he stressed.
Additionally, the minister highlighted the ongoing efforts to build production institutions, strengthen the legal framework for audiovisuals, and restore several cinematic works to preserve cinema as a collective memory of the nation.
The minister further emphasized the role of “resistance cinema” in constructing and preserving national memory, describing it as “a documentary treasure serving the nation and society.”
He also recognized the contributions of pioneers in revolutionary cinema, particularly in supporting just causes worldwide, including those of the Palestinian and Sahrawi peoples.
