Algerian President decides not to personally attend the emergency Arab summit, source says

ALGIERS – Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has decided not to personally attend the upcoming emergency Arab summit in Egypt on March 4, which is set to address developments in the Palestinian cause, Algeria Press Service (APS) reported, citing an informed source.

Instead, President Tebboune has appointed Ahmed Attaf, the Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs, National Community Abroad, and African Affairs, to represent Algeria at the summit.

This decision was made due to the “shortcomings in the summit’s preparation process,” the source said, adding that “a narrow group of Arab countries had monopolised the preparation of the summit’s outcomes, excluding coordination with other Arab nations that are equally invested in the Palestinian cause.”

The source further explained that “President Tebboune was displeased by this approach, which involved the inclusion of certain countries while sidelining others, as if supporting the Palestinian cause had been monopolized by a select few.” Meanwhile, the logical approach has always been to bolster Arab unity and ensure that all Arab countries remain united around their central cause—the Palestinian cause—especially given the existential challenges threatening the very foundation of the Palestinian national project.

Algeria, the source continued, has “consistently advocated for this approach.” Moreover, the country continues to uphold its commitment within the United Nations Security Council, serving as an unwavering Arab voice in defense of Palestinian rights.

In this regard, Algeria “seeks no reward or gratitude” but is instead deeply concerned by the current state of the Arab world, the source added.
