Algerian President Announces Creation of Two Bodies to Regulate Imports and Exports

ALGIERS – Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune announced on Sunday that two new bodies will be established in May, with one being responsible for regulating and overseeing imports, while the other will focus on supporting and promoting exports, noting that export operations will no longer be conducted through the National Agency for the Promotion of Foreign Trade (ALGEX).

“Following this meeting, I will instruct the government to establish two new bodies. The first will specialize in imports and will be equipped with a monitoring system to oversee import activities. The second will be dedicated to organizing and supporting exporters,” President Tebboune said in his speech at the opening of the second National Meeting with Economic Operators.

Under this new measure, “exports will no longer be handled through ALGEX,” he confirmed, adding that both bodies will be operational before the end of May.

President Tebboune praised Algeria’s remarkable progress in recent years, particularly in the growth of non-hydrocarbon exports. He highlighted the rise of numerous public and private companies across sectors such as cement, minerals, and agri-food products. Describing the achievement of $7 billion in non-hydrocarbon exports two years ago as “a miracle,” he emphasized the need to “spark a surge” to reach the $10 billion target this year.

Stressing the importance of ending dependence on hydrocarbons—a goal that is actively being pursued—President Tebboune affirmed that Algeria’s current production of durum wheat will enable the country to achieve self-sufficiency.

Regarding investment and entrepreneurship, President Tebboune reaffirmed his commitment to fostering “a new environment for industry and investment,” aimed at paving the way for a new generation of business leaders and industrialists. He also praised the integrity of Algerian youth and their growing contributions to the country’s economic progress.

He added that the economic momentum currently unfolding in the country, particularly driven by young investors and supported by the guidance of economic operators from the Algerian Economic Renewal Council, is a “noble movement.” This momentum is reflected in the growth of exports and the revival of investment, which is a “dynamic that benefits everyone—both the state and the investors.”

The Algerian president also expressed hope for increased private sector investment in the banking field to further strengthen the network of public and private banks currently operating in the market.
