Algerian Energy Minister holds talks with Eni on “Medlink” project

The Algerian Minister of State, Minister of Energy, Mines, and Renewable Energies, Mohamed Arkab, held talks on Tuesday with the CEO of the Italian company “Eni,” Claudio Descalzi, during which the electrical interconnection project between Algeria and Italy, particularly the “Medlink” project, was a central topic.

The discussions took place on the sidelines of the Mediterranean Energy Conference and Exhibition in Ravenna, Italy, with the participation of the CEOs of Sonatrach and Sonelgaz, Rachid Hachichi and Mourad Adjal, along with several officials from both parties, according to a statement from the Algerian Ministry of Energy.

During the meeting, the two parties reviewed the current state and future prospects of cooperation between Sonatrach and Eni, particularly in hydrocarbon exploration and development, with an emphasis on expanding partnerships into new projects related to offshore hydrocarbon exploitation, renewable energy, green hydrogen production, and carbon emission reduction technologies.

The electrical interconnection project between Algeria and Italy, particularly the “Medlink” project, was a key focus of the discussions, as one of the major initiatives prioritized by the European Union, which aims to establish a 2000 MW high-voltage submarine power line directly linking the electricity grids of both countries. This project further strengthens Algeria’s position as a reliable energy supplier, especially in green energy, thanks to the surplus national production driven by significant investments in the sector in recent years.

Descalzi expressed his great satisfaction with the quality of the partnership with the sector companies, praising the pivotal role they play in ensuring regional energy security. He also emphasized Eni’s commitment to expanding its cooperation with Sonatrach and Sonelgaz through ambitious projects based on innovation and energy transition. Additionally, he highlighted the importance of developing areas such as training, research and development, as well as new and renewable energy.

For his part, Minister Arkab emphasized Algeria’s willingness to continue working with strategic partners, particularly Eni, to boost exploration and production activities, develop infrastructure, and enhance national expertise through training programs and technical exchanges.
