Algerian Economic Renewal Council Cancels Visit to France

ALGIERS – The Algerian Economic Renewal Council announced on Tuesday the cancellation of its planned visit to France, including its scheduled meeting with the French employers’ association, MEDEF.
The Council’s decision was based on the principle of reciprocity, following a move by the French authorities to strongly pressure the head of a French maritime transport company to cancel a planned visit to Algeria, where he was set to launch an investment project, according to a statement released today.
“The cancellation of the French executive’s visit was prompted by the French authorities, citing the ongoing diplomatic tensions between the two countries—an action that starkly contradicts official calls for de-escalation and a return to normal relations between Algeria and France,” the source said, adding that “this contradiction is reflected in the French authorities’ own rhetoric, who repeatedly expressed concern over the limited involvement of French companies in Algeria’s international tenders, while taking actions that obstruct private investment initiatives.”
The Algerian Economic Renewal Council emphasized that, given the inconsistent stance and the negative signals directed at Algerian economic actors, it deems its planned visit to France — including the scheduled meeting with MEDEF — no longer worthwhile.
The Council reaffirmed its commitment to international partnerships based on the principles of reciprocity, transparency, and mutual respect, stressing that it remains fully mobilized to defend the interests of the Algerian economy and its stakeholders.
