Algerian Army: Attempts to Introduce More Than 5 Quintals of Treated Cannabis Via the Borders with Morocco Thwarted (Report)

ALGIERS, April 22, 2026 – Attempts to introduce more than 5 quintals of treated cannabis via the borders with Morocco were thwarted during operations carried out by units and detachments of the People’s National Army (ANP) during the period from April 15 to 21, according to an operational report of the ANP released on Wednesday.

“In the dynamic of sustained efforts in the fight against terrorism and against multifaceted organized crime, units and detachments of the People’s National Army carried out, during the period from April 15 to 21, 2026, several operations which resulted in quality outcomes reflecting the high professionalism, vigilance and constant readiness of our Armed Forces across the entire national territory,” the same source specified.

“As part of the fight against terrorism, detachments of the People’s National Army neutralized, at the level of the Military Sector of Ain Defla, in the First Military Region, one (1) terrorist and recovered one (1) Kalashnikov-type submachine gun, a quantity of ammunition and various items, while other ANP detachments arrested thirteen (13) elements supporting terrorist groups in different operations across the national territory.”

“As part of the fight against organized crime and in continuation of the efforts deployed to counter the scourge of drug trafficking in our country, combined detachments of the ANP, in coordination with the various security services, intercepted thirty-eight (38) drug traffickers and thwarted attempts to introduce five (5) quintals and fifty-five (55) kilograms of treated cannabis originating from the borders with Morocco, while four point twenty-five (4.25) kilograms of cocaine and four hundred ninety-six thousand three hundred and six (496,306) psychotropic tablets were seized during operations carried out across the Military Regions.”

“In Tamanrasset, Bordj Badji Mokhtar, In Salah and In Guezzam, ANP detachments arrested four hundred fourteen (414) individuals and seized sixty-eight (68) vehicles, four hundred three (403) electric generators, one hundred thirty-one (131) jackhammers, quantities of raw gold ore mixed with stones, as well as equipment used in illicit gold panning operations. Likewise, fourteen (14) other individuals were apprehended and two (2) Kalashnikov-type submachine guns, one (1) automatic pistol, eighteen (18) hunting rifles, twenty-two thousand nine hundred forty (22,940) liters of fuel, fifteen (15) quintals of tobacco and three (3) tons of foodstuffs intended for smuggling were seized during separate operations.”

“Furthermore, Coast Guard units thwarted, along national coasts, attempts at illegal emigration and rescued one hundred forty-three (143) individuals on board makeshift boats, while three hundred forty-five (345) illegal immigrants of various nationalities were arrested across the national territory,” the ANP operational report concluded.
