Algerian PM: Parties Are Using Drug Trafficking as a Weapon to Undermine Countries’ Security

ALGIERS — Algerian Prime Minister Nadir Larbaoui warned Thursday that drug trafficking is increasingly being used as a tool by certain parties to destabilize and undermine the security of nations, including Algeria. His remarks came during the World Drug Control Day ceremony held at the “Abdelatif-Rahal” International Conference Center in Algiers.

The event, organized by the National Office for Drug and Addiction Control (ONLCDT) under the high patronage of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, was attended by senior officials including the Chief of Staff at the Presidency of the Republic, Boualem Boualem, government members, and representatives of various national institutions.

Held under the theme “Breaking the chains: prevention, treatment and rehabilitation for all,” the ceremony marked the official unveiling of Algeria’s National Drug Control Strategy 2025–2029. The strategy aims to combat the complex and evolving threat of drug abuse through enhanced prevention, accessible treatment, and robust rehabilitation and reintegration programs.

In his address, Prime Minister Larbaoui stressed that “drug trafficking has become a weapon in the hands of hostile entities seeking to target the social fabric and national stability of countries.” He underscored the need for a coordinated and long-term response to what he described as a transnational threat fueled by criminal networks and external agendas.

The event also featured four thematic workshops focusing on prevention, law enforcement, treatment, and regional cooperation — all central components of the new national strategy. Through this initiative, Algeria reaffirms its determination to protect its youth, strengthen public health, and uphold national security against the scourge of narcotics.
